Is it South Park, South Park City, or Fairplay?

South Park is a region. It's surrounded by the Rocky Mountains' Mosquito and Park Mountain Ranges. This high valley ranges in elevation from approximately 9,000 to 10,000 ft. It encompasses about 1,000 square miles around the headwaters of the South Platte River in Park County. It is the largest and southernmost of three similarly named high altitude basins in the Front Range of Colorado, the others being North Park and Middle Park.

Fairplay is a town. It is located inside South Park at an elevation of 9,953 feet. As of the 2020 census, Fairplay has just over 700 people.

Fairplay went through a few different names.  In 1869 the town's name was changed to South Park City, and it stayed that way until 1874. When the museum was created in 1959, South Park City was named as a nod to that era in Fairplay's history.

Is this the real town from the cartoon?

Probably not. No one but the creators of the South Park cartoon truly knows what their inspiration was. Legend has it that Fairplay inspired the look of the cartoon, and the characters came from the creators' time at college in Boulder, CO.

Are any of the buildings haunted?

We’ve heard tales of ghostly encounters from visitors and staff in several buildings. If you’re interested in finding out more, try one of our After Dark Tours!
